To remove a stain from a keffiyeh, act early, blot instead of rubbing, and use cool water with a few drops of mild detergent. Work from the outside of the mark inward, rinse well, then dry the scarf flat in the shade. Avoid bleach, hot water and scrubbing, which fade the pattern and roughen the weave.

Key facts
  • Cool water and a mild detergent suit most stains on cotton, viscose and blended keffiyehs.
  • Bleach, hot water and direct sun are the three fastest ways to fade a pattern.
  • Blot, never rub: rubbing roughens the yarn and spreads the mark.
  • Test any cleaner on a hidden corner before you use it on the pattern.

This guide is about spot treatment: what to do in the first minutes after a mark appears. For the full routine of washing, drying, ironing and storing, read our complete keffiyeh and shemagh care guide, and keep our headwear resource centre handy for related questions.

What should you do first when a stain lands on a keffiyeh?

Blot the mark straight away with a clean, dry cloth to lift what is still wet. Do not rub, and do not use hot water, because heat can set many stains. Then rinse the area from the back of the fabric with cool water so the stain is pushed out, not deeper into the weave.

How do you remove the most common stains?

Match the method to the stain. Always start with the gentlest option and move on only if the mark remains. The table below uses ordinary household supplies, and every step uses cool water.

Stain First step If a mark remains
Sweat and body oil Soak in cool water with a little mild detergent for about 15 minutes. Rinse well and repeat once before washing the whole scarf.
Chai, tea or coffee Blot, then rinse from the back with cool water. Dab with a weak mild-detergent solution and rinse again.
Cooking oil, ghee or perfume oil Blot, then cover with cornflour or talc for 15 to 30 minutes to absorb the oil. Brush the powder off, dab with mild detergent and rinse.
Curry or food Lift off any solids with a spoon, then rinse from the back. Dab with mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear.
Mud and dust Let it dry fully, then shake or brush it off. Rinse the area in cool water and dab with mild detergent if needed.
Ink or pen Do not rub, because ink spreads easily. Take it to a specialist cleaner who handles delicate fabrics.

Does the fabric change how you clean a stain?

Yes. Cotton tolerates cleaning best. Viscose, used in Kashmiri Gold shemaghs, should be hand washed only and never agitated hard while wet, because it weakens when soaked. Blends and tasselled scarves need extra care at the fringe, which tangles easily. Our guide to cotton, polyester and viscose shemaghs explains each fibre, and the Kashmiri Gold Shemagh guide covers viscose in detail.

What should you never use on a keffiyeh stain?

  • Bleach, which can weaken fibres and fade dark yarns.
  • Hot water, which can set stains and speed up fading.
  • Hard scrubbing or a brush on the pattern, which roughens the weave.
  • Strong spot removers, unless you have tested them on a hidden corner.
  • A hot iron over a stain, which can fix the mark in place.
  • Direct sun while drying, which fades colour quickly.

How do you finish the job after the stain is gone?

Rinse until no soap remains, because residue attracts dirt and stiffens fibres. Press the water out with a clean towel instead of wringing, then dry the scarf flat in the shade. Once it is dry, iron it on the reverse side on a low to medium setting. If the same mark returns after drying, repeat the gentle steps once more before trying anything stronger.

When should you ask a specialist instead?

Stop and ask a cleaner who handles delicate fabrics if a stain is old, if it is ink or dye, or if the scarf is a prized viscose piece. A second round of home treatment on a damaged fibre rarely helps. For a worn scarf that no longer cleans up well, see how long a quality shemagh should last.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use bleach on a white keffiyeh?

We advise against it. Bleach can weaken the fibres and fade any dark yarns in the pattern. Use cool water and a mild detergent, and ask a specialist cleaner about stubborn marks on white cloth.

How do I get sweat stains out of a keffiyeh?

Soak the scarf in cool water with a little mild detergent for about 15 minutes, rinse well, and dry it flat in the shade. Repeat once if a mark remains.

Does hot water set a stain?

Heat can set many stains, so start with cool water. Hot water also speeds up fading in the pattern, which makes cool water the safer choice.

Can I put a stained keffiyeh in the washing machine?

Hand washing is safer because tassels tangle in a machine. If you must use one, put the scarf in a mesh bag on a gentle cold cycle, and never machine wash viscose.

How do I stop dark colours from running?

Wash a new dark scarf on its own the first time, in cool water, in case a little dye releases. Do not soak it for long, and dry it flat in the shade.
